For any artist, it’s a rewarding feeling to have sold-out concerts and to play in front of packed audiences. What’s even more impressive is if you can achieve this feat at the age of 11. Recently, 11 year-old Joey Alexander of Jakarta, Indonesia, played a set in front of a sold-out crowd at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in Manhattan. Joey, a self-taught jazz pianist, looked dwarfed next to a grand piano, but the level at which he played at was immense and comparable to some of the greatest piano legends in jazz history. The middle schooler has been making waves in the media and his debut album titled “My Favorite Things” came out this past Tuesday. Though it’s only been out for a couple days, the album has been released to rave reviews, including currently boasting a five-star rating on Amazon.
Although nearly everyone calls him a prodigy, Joey prefers to be recognized as a “jazz musician” and just likes to be himself. He first discovered jazz piano by listening to a couple CDs his dad brought back from New York and his passion for the art form has only grown from there. After he was discovered in Indonesia three years ago, the boy’s parents decided to move from Jakarta to New York last year so Joey could have better opportunities to pursue his passion for jazz piano. Joey already has a manager and frequently collaborates with other artists, stating that “You just jam with them . . . Even if you’re from other countries, in jazz you are one . . . Jazz is still the same language” (Today.com).
Aside from being such a skilled piano player at a young age, Joey is like any other typical 11 year-old and enjoys watching movies and playing with toys. Joey’s parents, Denny and Fara Sila, did not expect this much to happen to their son, but they are clearly proud of the achievements he’s made so far. Joey is pegged to have his career grow down the road, but for now, he’s starting small and showcasing his piano skills in different venues on the East Coast.
